Routine Cleaning and Inspection

Profile cutters should be cleaned and subjected to a preliminary inspection after every machining operation. This involves clearing chips from between the cutter teeth, wiping away oil and grease residues, and checking the teeth for any signs of chipping or wear. For tools subject to high-frequency use, it is recommended to conduct a routine inspection daily-or at the end of every machining shift-to ensure the tool remains sharp and precise for its next application.

Periodic Regrinding

Depending on the machining volume and the material of the workpieces being processed, profile cutters require periodic maintenance and regrinding. Generally, for medium-load machining, the cutter teeth should be inspected and lightly reground every 50 to 100 hours of operation; for high-load machining or when processing hard materials, this interval should be shortened, with a comprehensive inspection performed every 20 to 30 hours. Regrinding involves resharpening the cutting edges, correcting the accuracy of the tooth profile, and-when necessary-dressing the tool tips to restore the cutter's cutting performance.

Long-Term Maintenance and Tool Replacement

For profile cutters in long-term service, a replacement schedule should be established based on the cumulative machining volume and the extent of wear. Even after multiple regrinding cycles, the tool must be replaced promptly once the wear on the teeth reaches a certain threshold or if the tool sustains structural damage. Maintaining regular records of tool usage and regrinding frequency facilitates the systematic scheduling of maintenance cycles, thereby enhancing production efficiency and ensuring machining precision.
